Getting Around China

China has high-speed rail, domestic flights, large metro systems, ride-hailing and private road transport. The useful question is not “Which one is best?” but “Which mode makes sense for this exact leg of my trip?”

Practical transport planning for international visitors
QUICK MODE SELECTOR

🚇 Cross-city urban trips → Metro
🚕 Door-to-door / luggage → DiDi or taxi
🚆 Well-connected city pairs → High-speed rail
✈️ Very long intercity distances → Flight
🚐 Mountain, rural or multi-stop route → Private vehicle / arranged transfer

01 · Inside Major Cities

Use Metro as the Backbone, Then Fill the Gaps

China's large cities have extensive metro systems. Current official visitor guidance says foreign travelers can buy single-journey tickets at station counters or machines, use some local transit cards, or use mobile payment / QR systems where supported. Do not assume the exact payment method is identical in every city. If you are staying only a few days, a mix of metro, walking and occasional ride-hailing is usually simpler than learning every local transport app.

02 · DiDi & Ride-Hailing

Best When Door-to-Door Convenience Matters

Foreign visitors can use DiDi Greater China with overseas phone numbers and international credit cards, and ride-hailing is also accessible through Alipay or WeChat. This is especially useful with luggage, late arrivals, older travelers, children, bad weather or destinations far from a metro station.

Practical tip: save the destination in Chinese, confirm the pickup pin, and check the vehicle plate before getting in.
03 · Street Taxis

Still Useful, Especially at Transport Hubs

Official taxi queues at airports and railway stations are a reliable option when you do not want to troubleshoot an app after a long journey. Keep your destination name and address in Chinese. In a normal metered taxi, make sure the meter is being used. If you are arriving during a major holiday or late at night, pre-arranged transport can reduce waiting and communication friction.
04 · High-Speed Rail

The Default Choice for Many City Pairs

High-speed rail works particularly well when both cities are well connected and the stations are reasonably accessible. Beijing–Xi'an, Shanghai–Hangzhou and Chengdu–Chongqing are examples where rail can be very practical. Compare total door-to-door time, not only the time printed on the ticket. Station transfers, airport check-in and baggage procedures can change the calculation.

05 · Domestic Flights

Use Them When Distance Starts Beating Rail

Flights make more sense on very long journeys, when the rail journey would consume most of a day, or when the air route fits the itinerary much better. Include travel to the airport, check-in, security, boarding, baggage collection and the transfer from the arrival airport to your hotel. A two-hour flight is not a two-hour door-to-door journey.
06 · Train vs Flight

Compare the Whole Travel Day

A useful rule is to compare the time from hotel door to hotel door. High-speed rail often wins on medium-distance city pairs because stations can be closer to urban areas and the pre-departure process is simpler. Flights often win once distances become very large. Price, luggage, schedule frequency and your next hotel location matter too.
07 · Mountains & Remote Areas

Rail Gets You Close; Road Transport Finishes the Trip

China's rail network connects major cities extremely well, but many scenic mountain areas, rural attractions and multi-stop routes still require road transport. Chengdu to western Sichuan, regional mountain routes, some minority areas and multi-attraction days are examples where a private vehicle or pre-arranged transfer can remove repeated taxi bookings and make luggage handling much easier.
08 · When Private Transport Makes Sense

Not Every Private Car Is a Luxury Upgrade

Private road transport becomes more valuable when the group has older travelers, young children, large luggage, several stops in one day, mobility needs, remote hotels or attractions with weak public transport. The advantage is not simply comfort; it is reducing wasted transfer time and making the route physically workable.

09 · Driving Yourself

An Overseas Driver's License Is Not Automatically Enough

Foreign travelers who want to rent and drive a car in China generally need a valid Chinese driver's license or a Chinese Provisional Driving Permit, not just an overseas license. Current official guidance says short-term visitors can apply for a provisional permit, typically with a passport, overseas driver's license and Chinese translation, photos and other required documents. China also has specific mutual-recognition arrangements with a limited number of countries. For a normal first holiday, self-driving is usually more complicated than rail plus ride-hailing or a private driver.
10 · Airports & Railway Stations

The Last Mile Is Part of the Journey

Do not stop planning when you see “arrive Shanghai” or “arrive Chengdu.” Check which airport terminal or railway station you are actually using and how long it takes to reach the hotel. Large cities can have airports and stations far apart. If you are connecting from a train to a flight, or between two stations, leave more time than the timetable alone suggests.
11 · Travelers With Luggage, Children or Older Family

The Best Mode Changes With the Group

A metro trip that is easy for one backpacker may be unpleasant for a family with four suitcases. A 20-minute transfer with stairs and a long station walk may matter more than a small fare difference. When planning for families or older travelers, compare walking distance, transfers, elevator access, luggage handling and the need to move at a fixed time.
12 · Arrival Day

Make the First Transfer Simple

Before landing, get mobile data working, save the hotel address in Chinese and decide how you will leave the airport. Airport rail or metro is excellent when the route is direct and luggage is manageable; DiDi or taxi is better for door-to-door simplicity; a confirmed private transfer is useful for families, late arrivals, large groups or destinations with awkward public transport.
13 · A Practical Decision Framework

Distance Is Only One Variable

Choose transport using five questions: How far is the journey? Where are the stations or airports relative to your hotels? How much luggage are you carrying? Who is traveling with you? Does the destination sit on a strong public-transport corridor or beyond it? The cheapest ticket is not always the cheapest travel day once transfers and lost time are included.
14 · Metro Payment Is Not Identical Nationwide

Do Not Assume One City Rule Applies Everywhere

Official visitor guidance confirms several ways to use urban rail: single-journey tickets, transit cards, Alipay transport codes and, in some cities, direct international-card payment. Beijing and Shanghai have expanded foreign-card convenience, but this should not be treated as a nationwide gate standard. When arriving in a new city, check the local station signage or use a staffed counter if the app workflow is unclear.
15 · Buses

Useful, but Less Forgiving for a First-Day Visitor

City buses can be efficient and cheap, and official guidance supports cash, transit cards and mobile QR codes in many systems. The difficulty for a first-time visitor is identifying the correct stop, direction and boarding / alighting process. Use a local navigation app and keep small change if relying on cash because buses may not provide change. Metro or ride-hailing is usually simpler when you have luggage.
16 · Route Examples

Transport Choice Should Have a Reason

Beijing → Xi'an is a strong high-speed rail candidate because both cities are major rail hubs and the train avoids an airport process. Chengdu → Chongqing is another easy rail pairing. Chengdu → western Sichuan is different: rail may cover only the first part, while a road vehicle is needed for mountain areas and multiple scenic stops. Shanghai → Hangzhou is short enough that rail is usually straightforward. These examples are useful because they show the decision logic, not because every traveler must follow the same route.
17 · Early Flights and Late Arrivals

The Clock Can Change the Best Mode

A metro that is perfect at 3 PM may not be running for a very early flight or late-night arrival. Check first and last service times for the actual airport line, station and date. If public transport does not fit, book a taxi, DiDi or transfer instead of designing a connection around service you have not confirmed.
18 · Mobility & Accessibility

Reduce Transfers Before You Reduce Cost

Travelers with limited mobility, older family members, strollers or several suitcases should count stairs, station walking and transfers as part of the journey. One direct ride can be better than two cheap metro changes. For private touring, tell the operator about mobility needs before the trip so vehicle height, walking distances and attraction access can be considered in the itinerary.
FAQ · GETTING AROUND CHINA

Is high-speed rail better than flying?

Often for medium-distance city pairs, but compare hotel-to-hotel time, schedule, luggage and station / airport location rather than only the ticket duration.

Can foreigners use DiDi?

Yes. Current official guidance supports overseas mobile numbers and international credit cards in DiDi Greater China, and ride-hailing is also available through Alipay and WeChat.

Can tourists drive in China with an international license?

An overseas license alone is generally not enough. Short-term visitors normally need a Chinese Provisional Driving Permit unless a specific mutual-recognition arrangement applies.
