CHINA TRAVEL GUIDE · HIGH-SPEED RAIL

China Train Guide

China's high-speed rail is usually easy once the details are right. The real first-time problems are booking with a foreign passport, choosing the correct station, leaving enough time for security and knowing what your passport does at the gate.

THE WHOLE PROCESS

🎫 Book with exact passport details → 🛂 verify identity → 📍 check the exact station → 🧳 arrive with a buffer → 🚉 security + gate → 📘 use the original passport → 🚆 board the correct carriage and seat.

01 · Booking

Use 12306 as the Official Reference Point

12306 is China Railway's official ticketing platform. The English website supports purchase, changes, refunds and destination changes, and foreign passengers can use valid passports for real-name ticketing. Third-party booking services can be convenient for planning or English-language support, but their service fees and workflows are separate from China Railway's rules.

02 · Passport Verification

Do This Before Tickets Matter

China uses real-name railway ticketing. Enter the passenger name and passport number exactly as the booking system requires and complete identity verification before relying on the account. If online verification does not complete, station counters can help with identity-related issues. Bring the original passport — a photo of the passport on your phone is not the travel document linked to the ticket.

Practical advice: finish verification before the day popular tickets go on sale. Troubleshooting while a train is selling out is avoidable stress.
03 · Booking Window

Plan Early, Buy When Tickets Open

China Railway's current rules generally release tickets within a 15-day presale window, including the travel date, though the railway operator can adjust the presale period. A planning platform may show a route months ahead even though the official ticket cannot yet be purchased. Popular departure times can sell out during weekends, school holidays and national holidays.

04 · Station Names

The City Name Is Not the Station Name

Large Chinese cities often have several major stations. Beijing Railway Station, Beijing South and Beijing West are different places; Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing and many other cities have the same problem. Save the exact departure and arrival station in both English and Chinese before you order a ride or choose a hotel.
05 · How Early to Arrive

Do Not Treat a Mega-Station Like a Small Platform

Passengers pass security and identity / ticket checks before boarding, and large stations can involve significant walking between the entrance, waiting hall and gate. China Railway advises passengers to reserve enough time because queues can occur.

Travel advice, not an official minimum: for a first visit to a large station, a 45–60 minute buffer is a sensible starting point. Increase it during major holidays, with children / older travelers, or if you still need ticket-office help.
06 · Boarding

Your Passport Is the Key Document

For railway e-tickets, passengers use the valid identity document used to buy the ticket to check in, board and exit. China Railway explicitly states that an itinerary sheet or reimbursement receipt cannot be used as a ticket. At some stations your passport may work at an automated gate; at others, or if the document is not read correctly, staff may direct you to a staffed lane. Do not turn one station experience into a nationwide rule.
07 · Seat Classes

Second Class Is Enough for Most Trips

Second Class is usually the best-value default for ordinary sightseeing. First Class gives more space on many trains and can be worth it for longer journeys or travelers who value comfort. Business Class is a premium product available on selected services; layouts differ by train, so do not assume every train has the same cabin.

08 · Luggage

Most Tourist Luggage Stays With You

Most travelers carry bags onto the train. Current China Railway passenger rules give ordinary passengers a free carry-on allowance of up to 20 kg. High-speed train rules also publish dimensional and per-item limits, so check the current rule if your luggage is unusually large. Smaller bags typically use overhead racks; larger suitcases may go in larger luggage spaces depending on the train.
09 · Changes & Refunds

Read the Current Rule Before You Click

12306 supports ticket changes and refunds subject to timing, availability and fees. From February 2, 2026, China Railway also introduced a limited free-refund rule for certain accidental official-platform purchases: eligible orders can receive one free refund on one order per day when cancelled within 30 minutes of purchase and at least four hours before departure, subject to published exclusions. Do not assume this applies to every ticket.
10 · Train-Day Checklist

Before You Leave the Hotel

✓ Original passport used for the booking
✓ Exact departure station in English and Chinese
✓ Train number and departure time
✓ Carriage / seat saved
✓ Comfortable buffer for security and gate-finding
✓ Luggage within current rules
✓ Booking screenshot saved offline
✓ Arrival station checked — not just the city name
10 · Paying for Tickets

Foreign Cards Are Now Part of the Official Visitor Flow

Current official visitor guidance says foreign travelers can buy railway tickets after identity verification and pay online with supported Chinese or foreign bank cards as well as mobile-payment apps. Ticket offices can also accept multiple payment methods. That is different from older China travel guides that say a foreign card can never be used on the railway system. Payment availability can still depend on the channel, card issuer and verification result, so keep another payment method available.
11 · From Waiting Hall to Seat

Know What You Are Looking For

Once inside the station, use the departure screen to match your train number and gate. Boarding usually opens shortly before departure, and the gate leads passengers down to the correct platform. Your booking identifies the carriage and seat. On the platform, carriage-position markings can help you wait near the right part of the train. High-speed trains stop for a limited time, so board first and solve minor luggage organization after you are inside rather than blocking the door.
12 · Food, Water & Power

You Do Not Need to Pack Like It Is an Overnight Bus

Major railway stations have shops and food outlets, and many high-speed trains also sell drinks, snacks or meals. Availability varies by service, so travelers with dietary restrictions should bring something suitable rather than assuming the onboard selection will meet every need. Power sockets are common on modern high-speed trains but location and socket type vary by train. Keep a charged phone or power bank for tickets, maps and arrival transport.
13 · Connections Between Trains

Station Transfers Can Break an Otherwise Good Itinerary

A connection is easy when both trains use the same station and you have enough time to find the next gate. It is completely different if the itinerary requires moving from one railway station to another across a large city. Check the full station names before booking separate tickets. If you are building your own connection, include time for leaving the station, road or metro travel, security at the next station and a delay buffer.
14 · Sold-Out Trains & Peak Dates

The Best Train Can Disappear Before the Route Does

A route may have dozens of trains, but the departures that fit a sightseeing itinerary can sell first. Around Spring Festival, Labor Day, National Day and other busy periods, popular trains deserve early attention. If your preferred service is unavailable, look at earlier or later departures, nearby stations where practical, or official waitlist options when offered by 12306. Do not assume a third-party site can create inventory that China Railway has already sold.
15 · Arrival Matters Too

Know What Happens After the Train Stops

Before departure, check how you will travel from the arrival station to the hotel. Large stations can be outside the historic center or on the opposite side of the city from your accommodation. Save the Chinese hotel address and, if using DiDi, wait until you have reached the correct pickup area before requesting a car. This small step avoids a common first-time problem: a driver waiting on one level of a huge station while you are standing somewhere else.
