First Trip to China

First Trip to China
CHINA TRAVEL GUIDE · FIRST-TIME VISITORS
First Trip to China
Your first trip to China becomes much easier once a few practical pieces are in place: the right entry route, working mobile data, a payment backup, the correct hotel address in Chinese, and a realistic itinerary. You do not need to master every Chinese app or pre-book every hour of the trip.
Last reviewed: September 24, 2026 · Practical guide for international visitors
IF THIS IS YOUR FIRST CHINA TRIP
✈️ Do these eight things before you fly.
🛂 1. Confirm whether you need a visa, qualify for visa-free entry, or are using visa-free transit.
📝 2. Complete the official Arrival Card before departure if it applies to you.
📶 3. Set up mobile data for the moment you land.
💳 4. Install Alipay and add at least one overseas bank card.
🏨 5. Save your first hotel's name, phone number and address in Chinese.
📱 6. Install only the travel apps you will actually use.
🚆 7. Check exact railway stations and airport terminals for every intercity transfer.
📅 8. Book the things that can genuinely sell out, but keep the rest of the trip flexible.

01 · Entry Comes First
Check Your Entry Route Before You Lock In the Trip
China now has several different entry routes for international visitors, including visa-free entry for eligible ordinary passport holders, bilateral visa-exemption agreements, visa-free transit and standard visas. The correct answer depends on your nationality, passport type, purpose of travel, route and length of stay.
Do not plan around a headline that simply says “China is visa-free.” A 30-day visa-free stay and a 240-hour visa-free transit are not the same thing. Transit has route, port and permitted-area conditions. If you are unsure, solve this before buying non-refundable long-haul flights.
NEWER ARRIVAL STEP
China's online Arrival Card
Since November 20, 2025, eligible foreign travelers can submit arrival information online before coming to China through official National Immigration Administration channels. The service is free. If you do not complete it in advance, online devices and paper Arrival Cards remain available at ports of entry. Avoid third-party websites that charge a fee for the form.
Go deeper: China Visa Guide — use it to work out which entry policy applies to your passport and route.
02 · Plan Fewer Bases, Better Days
China Is Bigger Than It Looks on an Itinerary
A route can look efficient on a map and still feel exhausting once you add hotel check-out, station transfers, security, luggage, waiting time and the trip from the arrival station to your next hotel. First-time visitors often lose more usable sightseeing time to transfers than they expected.
PRACTICAL RULE OF THUMB — NOT AN OFFICIAL RULE
7–10 days: two or three bases usually gives a first-time traveler enough room to experience each place.
12–16 days: three or four bases is a more comfortable starting point than trying to collect cities.
Mountain or rural routes: count road-transfer days honestly. A two-hour train can still be followed by several hours by road.
Useful pairings have a reason behind them. Beijing + Xi'an works for a history-focused first trip. Shanghai + Hangzhou works because the rail connection is easy. Chengdu + Chongqing is a practical southwest city combination. Chengdu + Jiuzhaigou needs more thought because the final part of the journey is not the same as moving between two downtown railway stations.

03 · Book the Right Things Early
Do Not Pre-Book Every Hour of the Trip
There is a difference between protecting the important parts of your trip and removing all flexibility. Weather changes. You may want longer in a neighborhood than expected. A museum may be worth three hours rather than one. A day trip may make less sense after you arrive.
BOOK EARLY WHEN IT MATTERS
Entry documents · international flights · first-night accommodation · fixed intercity transport · attractions with limited timed entry · anything essential during a major holiday period.
LEAVE SOME ROOM
Ordinary meals · local cafés · flexible neighborhood time · many city walks · low-risk activities that can be booked after you see the weather and your energy level.
During Chinese public holidays, domestic demand rises sharply. If your dates overlap Spring Festival, Labor Day or National Day, treat trains, flights, hotels and major attractions as a separate planning problem rather than assuming normal availability.
04 · Choose Your First Hotel for Convenience
Your Hotel Is More Than a Bed on Day One
For the first night, prioritize an easy arrival: a clear address, reliable front desk, sensible distance from your arrival point and recent reviews. Save the hotel name, phone number and full address in both English and Chinese. A Romanized hotel name alone may not be enough for a taxi driver or when searching a local map.
ACCOMMODATION REGISTRATION
If you stay in a hotel, the hotel handles your accommodation registration and submits the required information to the authorities. If you stay in a private residence or another non-hotel address, you or your host must complete accommodation registration within 24 hours. Since September 21, 2026, online registration for non-hotel stays is available nationwide through official NIA channels, while the offline option remains available.
Older travel advice sometimes says you must find a hotel with a special “license to accept foreigners.” That is no longer a good rule of thumb: national authorities have instructed booking platforms and accommodation operators not to impose unlawful “foreign guest qualification” restrictions. For a smooth first stay, the practical issue is service quality and correct passport registration, not hunting for a mythical special hotel category.
SAVE THIS BEFORE LANDING
🏨 Save Your Hotel Details Before Landing
Before you fly, save your first hotel's English name, Chinese name and full Chinese address, ☎️ phone number, and a 📍 screenshot or map pin showing the location.
The Chinese address is especially useful for taxis, ride-hailing pickups and asking for directions. Keep both searchable text and a screenshot so you can still show the address even if mobile data is not working.
05 · Get Your Phone Working Before You Need It
Mobile Data Is Part of Your Transport and Payment System
In China, your phone is not only for messages. It is also how you pay, navigate, call a ride, manage train bookings, translate signs and contact your hotel. The best time to solve connectivity is before the airport arrival hall.
LOWEST FRICTION
International Roaming
Keep your normal number and activate data when you arrive. Compare the price before travel.
SHORT TRIPS
Travel eSIM
Convenient if your phone supports it. Check coverage, data allowance and how your provider handles overseas services.
LOCAL NUMBER
China SIM
Foreign visitors can apply in person with a passport at self-operated telecom service halls.
The mainland internet environment is different from many other countries. Access to some overseas websites and apps can vary depending on your connection. If Gmail, Google services, WhatsApp or other overseas services are essential to you, check how your roaming or travel-data provider currently handles access before departure.
Go deeper: Internet in China — compare roaming, travel eSIMs, local SIMs and real-world access before you choose.
06 · Set Up Payment at Home
Do Not Make Airport Wi-Fi Your Payment Setup Plan
Overseas visitors can use mobile payment, bank cards and RMB cash in China. In daily life, mobile payment is often the most convenient option. Alipay and Weixin Pay support eligible overseas bank cards, but card verification still depends on the payment platform and your issuing bank.
A BETTER BACKUP SYSTEM
Primary: Alipay linked to an eligible overseas card.
Second option: Weixin Pay / WeChat Pay.
Physical backup: one international bank card, preferably a different card from the one linked in your main wallet.
Cash backup: a modest amount of RMB for situations where digital payment is inconvenient.
Do not interpret this as “China does not accept cash” or “foreign cards never work.” Both are misleading. The useful point is that acceptance varies by situation, while QR payment is the everyday workflow at many small businesses.

07 · Install Fewer Apps, Know Them Better
Five Apps Cover Most First-Trip Friction
You do not need to recreate a Chinese resident's phone before your holiday. Start with the tools that solve the problems a visitor actually has.

08 · Treat Chinese Addresses as Travel Tools
Save Important Places in Chinese, Not Only English
Many airport, station and hotel staff can work with international travelers, but you should not assume every taxi driver, restaurant employee or small business will understand an English place name. This is not a crisis if your phone is prepared.
Before departure, save the Chinese names and addresses of your first hotel, major railway stations and any harder-to-find destination. Keep them as searchable text and screenshots. This becomes especially useful when mobile data is slow, your ride-hailing pickup pin is unclear or the pronunciation of a place name is not enough.
09 · High-Speed Rail Is Easy — If the Details Are Right
The City Name Is Not the Station Name
Foreign travelers can buy real-name railway tickets using a valid passport through China Railway's official 12306 channels after identity verification. For e-tickets, the passport used for the booking is the key travel document; you do not need a paper ticket simply to board.
The more common first-timer problem is logistical: large cities often have several railway stations. Beijing Railway Station, Beijing South and Beijing West are different places. The same pattern appears across China. Check the exact station in Chinese and English before ordering a ride.
TRAVEL ADVICE — NOT AN OFFICIAL MINIMUM
For your first departure from a large Chinese station, a 45–60 minute buffer is a sensible planning choice. You may move through the station faster than that, but security, passport checks, walking distance and finding the correct gate are easier when you are not racing the clock. China Railway itself advises passengers to reserve enough time because queues can occur at security and ID checks.

10 · ✈️ Your First 90 Minutes in China
Make Arrival Deliberately Boring
After a long-haul flight, this is not the time to test every part of your travel plan at once. The goal is to get connected, get to the hotel and make sure the basics work.
🛂 01 Complete immigration and keep your passport accessible.
📶 02 Get mobile data working before leaving the terminal if possible.
📍 03 Open the saved Chinese hotel address and confirm the destination.
🚕 04 Use airport rail, metro, DiDi, the official taxi queue or a confirmed transfer.
🏨 05 Check in first. Let the hotel complete your accommodation registration.
💳 06 Make one small mobile-payment purchase and confirm your backup method works.
🌦️ 07 Check tomorrow's weather, first transport and any timed reservation.
🕒 08 Keep the first evening light unless your arrival time and energy genuinely allow more.
11 · Small Things That Make the Trip Easier
The Useful Details Are Often Not the Dramatic Ones
Carry tissues. Keep your phone charged. Screenshot bookings that would be difficult to reconstruct without data. Keep your original passport secure but accessible on transport days and at hotel check-in. Save important phone numbers separately from the apps that use them.
Do not assume every attraction uses the same reservation system, every restaurant has an English menu, or every city uses the same transit rules. China is easier to travel in when you prepare for variation rather than searching for one nationwide answer to everything.
12 · Common First-Trip Mistakes
Avoid These and the Trip Gets Much Simpler
Trying to visit too many cities. Every transfer has a hidden door-to-door cost.
Setting up Alipay after landing. Account or card verification is easier to solve at home with stable internet.
Relying on one payment method. A second wallet, card or cash backup prevents a minor failure becoming a travel problem.
Saving only English place names. Chinese names and addresses are practical tools, not optional extras.
Arriving at a large station “just in time.” Security and passport checks are efficient, but they still take time.
Booking every hour months ahead. Secure scarce items; leave ordinary travel flexible.
Using old China travel advice without checking the date. Visa rules, arrival procedures, payment functions and accommodation services have changed quickly in recent years.
13 · Final Pre-Flight Checklist
What Should Be Ready Before You Board?
✓ Entry route confirmed for your passport and itinerary
✓ Arrival Card completed through an official channel if required
✓ Passport name used consistently in key bookings
✓ First hotel confirmed, with Chinese name and address saved

✓ Alipay set up with at least one card
✓ Second payment method available

✓ First intercity train / flight details checked carefully
✓ High-demand reservations booked where necessary
✓ Important bookings saved as screenshots
✓ First-day transfer from airport or station to hotel understood
FAQ · First Trip to China
Can I travel in China without speaking Chinese?
Yes. Many international travelers do. The difference between a smooth trip and a frustrating one is usually preparation: keep a translation app, Chinese addresses and screenshots of important bookings. Do not assume every taxi driver or small business will communicate comfortably in English.
Can foreigners use Alipay and WeChat Pay?
Eligible overseas bank cards can be linked to Alipay and Weixin Pay. Set up at least one wallet before departure and carry another payment method because card verification and individual payments can still fail.
Do I need a Chinese SIM card?
Not necessarily. International roaming or a travel eSIM can be easier for a short visit. A local SIM becomes more useful when you want a Chinese phone number or are staying longer. Foreign visitors can apply for a local SIM in person with a passport at official operator service halls.
Do I need a paper train ticket?
For normal railway e-ticket travel, your valid passport used for the booking is the important document. China Railway states that an itinerary sheet or reimbursement receipt is not a boarding ticket.
How many cities should I visit on a first trip?
There is no official formula. As a practical starting point, two or three bases in 7–10 days usually creates a more relaxed first trip than changing cities every one or two nights. Adjust for long-distance flights, mountain roads and your travel style.
Should I carry cash in China?
Yes, a small amount is useful as backup. Cash remains a valid payment option, but mobile payment is often more convenient for everyday purchases. Carrying mobile payment, a physical card and some RMB gives you better redundancy than relying on only one method.
THE MAIN IDEA
You do not need to understand everything about China before you arrive.
Get the few high-friction items right — entry, internet, payment, addresses, major transport and first-night logistics — and leave enough space to travel normally once you are here.
