China Travel Apps

You do not need a Chinese resident's phone to travel well in China. For most first-time visitors, five core apps cover the biggest friction points: payment, messaging, trains, ride-hailing and navigation.

01 · Alipay

The One App Most Visitors Should Understand Before Landing

Alipay is more than a wallet. For a short-term visitor it can also act as a gateway to transport codes, ride-hailing and mini programs. Overseas users can register with an international mobile number and link eligible international cards. Set it up before departure so card verification, SMS codes and identity checks are solved while you still have stable internet.

Useful mindset: learn Scan, the payment code and Transport. You do not need to understand every financial feature in the app.
02 · WeChat

Messaging Matters as Much as Payment

WeChat is widely used for communication in China and includes Weixin Pay. Hotels, guides, drivers and local contacts may ask to add you on WeChat, and many services also exist as WeChat mini programs. For a tourist, WeChat is valuable as a communication tool and a second payment option rather than something you must master like a local user.
03 · Railway 12306

Use the Official Rail App for the Rules That Matter

12306 is China Railway's official ticketing platform. Foreign travelers can use valid passports for real-name ticketing after identity verification. If your trip includes high-speed rail, set up the account before the ticket-sales window matters; passport verification is easier to solve at home than while a popular train is selling out.

04 · DiDi

The Easy Way to Avoid Explaining an Address to a Driver

Current official visitor guidance says DiDi Greater China supports registration with overseas mobile numbers and international credit cards. You can also access ride-hailing through Alipay or WeChat. DiDi is especially useful for airport-to-hotel transfers, late-night rides, heavy luggage and places that are awkward by metro.

Check the vehicle license plate before getting in. Save the destination in Chinese as a backup if the pickup point or map pin is confusing.
05 · AMap Global

Local Navigation Has Improved a Lot for International Visitors

AMap — Gaode Map in Chinese — now offers multilingual services for international visitors. Current services include navigation, public transport, walking, place search, ride-hailing and practical travel information. Its multilingual rollout includes English plus languages such as Malay, Indonesian, Thai, Japanese, Korean, French and more. This makes it much more useful to foreign visitors than older China guides suggest.
06 · Translation

Use a Translation App You Have Already Tested

Camera translation is useful for menus, signs, ticketing screens and small shops. The best translation tool is not necessarily the app with the longest feature list — it is the one that works on your phone, supports the languages you need and has an offline or fallback mode if connectivity is poor. Test camera translation before you travel.
07 · Booking Apps

Do Not Install Every Chinese Consumer App

Many foreign travelers use a global booking platform they already know for flights and hotels, while using official Chinese apps only when they solve a specific problem. You do not need Meituan, Dianping, Qunar, every airline app and every city-specific metro app on day one. Install them only when the trip actually requires them.
08 · Mini Programs

Sometimes You Do Not Need Another App

China's app ecosystem often uses mini programs inside Alipay or WeChat. That can reduce the number of standalone apps you need. Transport, ride-hailing, attraction bookings and government or service functions may appear inside these larger apps. For a visitor, the practical question is not “What do locals install?” but “What is the simplest reliable way for me to complete this task?”
09 · NIA 12367

Useful if You Stay Outside a Hotel

Foreigners staying in hotels have their accommodation registration handled by the hotel. For non-hotel stays, official NIA channels now support online accommodation registration in an expanding nationwide system. NIA 12367 is therefore useful in situations where you are staying in a private residence, not for every ordinary hotel guest.

10 · Before You Fly

Build One Simple Travel Folder

Put your core travel tools on one home-screen page: Alipay, WeChat, 12306, DiDi, AMap and your translation app. Save hotel addresses in Chinese, screenshot important bookings, log in before departure and keep access to SMS or email verification. A phone full of twenty unfamiliar apps is less useful than six tools you already know how to use.
11 · What You Probably Do Not Need

Do Not Turn App Preparation Into a Homework Assignment

Food-delivery, restaurant-review, local shopping and city-specific apps can be excellent for residents, but many are Chinese-first products and are not essential for a short first visit. Install Meituan, Dianping or a city-specific transport app only when a real need appears. If you are traveling for ten days, learning a complicated local app to make one restaurant booking may cost more time than it saves.
12 · International Numbers & Verification

Keep Your Home Number Reachable

Several visitor-friendly Chinese apps now accept overseas mobile numbers, but registration may still rely on SMS or email verification. Keep your home SIM active if possible until all core apps are working, and make sure your bank's verification messages can reach you. If you switch to a Chinese SIM later, do not accidentally lose access to the number used for account recovery.
13 · App Stores & Developer Names

Download Before You Travel and Verify What You Installed

Install core apps from an official app store before departure. App names can be similar, and unofficial copies or old guides may point to outdated versions. Check the developer name, app icon and recent update history. For Railway 12306 in particular, use the official China Railway product rather than a similarly named booking app if your goal is to use official ticketing.
14 · Maps Are Not Just for Walking

Save Places Before You Need Them

AMap is useful when you already know the destination, but its real value comes from saving the hotel, railway stations, restaurants and attractions before the day gets busy. Search both the English and Chinese name when possible, then confirm the address against the booking. A map pin is more reliable than assuming two hotels with similar English names are the same property.
15 · What to Keep Offline

An App Is Not a Backup If It Needs the Internet to Open

Keep screenshots of hotel addresses, flight details, train bookings and any timed attraction reservation. Save emergency contacts and the Chinese names of the most important places as plain text. If your data connection drops or an account unexpectedly logs out, these offline copies keep you moving while you fix the app problem.
FAQ · CHINA TRAVEL APPS

Do I need both Alipay and WeChat?

You can travel with one, but having both gives you a useful payment backup and WeChat adds communication functions.

Do I need the standalone DiDi app?

Not always. Ride-hailing is also available through Alipay and WeChat. Install the standalone app if you prefer its dedicated interface.

Is AMap available in English?

Yes. AMap has expanded multilingual support for international visitors and is available in overseas app stores.
