A QUICK ANSWER
The best snow trip depends on what you want to experience.
Choose Xiling or Zhegu for snow play; Wawu Mountain for frosted forests; Niubei Mountain for cloud seas and sunrise; Dagu Glacier or Hailuogou for ice and alpine views; and Jiuzhaigou for bright lakes in winter.

02 / THE CLASSICS
Five iconic winter landscapes
The places most travellers begin with — each offering a different experience.
01 / DAY ON THE SNOW
Xiling Snow Mountain
Ski resorts · Snow play · Mountain cable cars

Xiling Snow Mountain, west of Chengdu, is one of the most straightforward places to make snow activities the highlight of your day. Depending on the winter season, you can try skiing, enjoy snow play or ride cable cars for broad views of the mountains. It is an especially appealing choice for travellers seeing snow for the first time.
Allow a full day for the mountain. For a more restful break, add an overnight stay around Huashuiwan, known for its hot spring resorts.
02 / SNOWY VALLEY
Bipenggou
Forests · Frozen lakes · Seasonal winter activities

Bipenggou is a spectacular mountain valley where snowy ridges rise over evergreen forests, lakes and open alpine scenery. Some winter seasons bring dedicated snow-play areas, so you can combine sightseeing with time outdoors. The scenery changes as you travel deeper into the valley, making it rewarding even for travellers who do not plan to ski.
Allow one day in the scenic area. For a slower pace, stay near Bipenggou or in Gurgou, where natural hot spring resorts add a relaxing evening.
03 / HIGH-ALTITUDE VIEWS
Dagu Glacier
Glacier landscapes · Cable car · Snow peaks

Dagu Glacier delivers an entirely different perspective on Sichuan winter. The sightseeing cable car reaches a viewing area at approximately 4,860 metres (15,945 feet), opening up sweeping views of snowy mountains and glacial terrain. The attraction is the vast alpine setting rather than traditional ski-resort activities.
The altitude is significant, even with cable-car access. Travellers should consider their health and altitude tolerance before including this stop. It works best as part of a two- or three-day mountain journey with an overnight stay around Heishui.
04 / PEAKS & VALLEYS
Mount Siguniang
Shuangqiao Valley · Alpine scenery · Mountain photography

Shuangqiao Valley · Alpine scenery · Mountain photography
Mount Siguniang is best known for its dramatic peaks and expansive mountain valleys. For a first sightseeing visit, Shuangqiao Valley offers a practical way to explore the scenery using the park’s sightseeing transport. Snow on the higher mountains, quiet forest scenes and changing light make it a wonderful place for nature lovers and photographers.
05 / WINTER COLOUR
Jiuzhaigou
Turquoise lakes · Waterfalls · Winter forest

Jiuzhaigou is unforgettable in winter. Its famously blue and green lakes can appear beneath snowy slopes, with forested valleys and waterfalls completing the scene. It is a place for walking, scenic viewpoints and close-up appreciation of nature—not a ski destination. A winter visit feels very different from the bright colours of autumn.
Give the park a full sightseeing day and stay nearby. With more time, pair Jiuzhaigou with Huanglong for a longer journey through Sichuan’s alpine landscapes.
03 / GO A LITTLE FURTHER
More of Sichuan in winter
Snow-covered forests, high ridgelines and glacier country — six places that deserve a closer look.
01 / ABA · LIXIAN
Zhegu Mountain
Ski slopes & snow play

A highland destination with winter snow activities, ski runs and playful snowy scenery. A natural fit for a short winter getaway around Lixian and Gurgou.
Best for first-time snow fun, friends and families.
02 / MEISHAN · HONGYA
Wawu Mountain
Rime, snow forests & frozen waterfalls

Wawu Mountain is especially atmospheric when the plateau forests turn white with rime. Snow-covered branches, icy cascades and woodland scenery offer a quieter style of winter escape.
Best for snowy forests, nature walks and landscape photography.
03 / YA’AN · SHIMIAN
Wanggangping
Gongga views & mountain stays

Wanggangping looks toward the great Mount Gongga range. On a clear day, snow peaks rise above forested slopes; seasonal mountain activities can make a stay even more enjoyable.
Best for mountain panoramas and a relaxed winter resort stay.
04 / YA’AN · YINGJING AREA
Niubei Mountain
Cloud seas, sunrise & snow peaks

Niubei Mountain is a place to spend the night for the morning view. When the conditions align, sunrise lights up distant snowy mountains above a vast sea of clouds.
Best for sunrise lovers, photographers and overnight viewpoints.
05 / GARZÊ · LUDING
Hailuogou
Glaciers, forest & hot springs

On the eastern side of Mount Gongga, Hailuogou brings together glacier scenery and mountain forest. A stay around the valley can be paired with hot spring experiences nearby.
Best for glacier scenery and restorative mountain stays.
06 / YA’AN · TIANQUAN
Erlangshan Labahe
Snowy woods & mountain wildlife

Labahe is known for its forests, valleys and wildlife habitats. Winter snow can turn the woods beautifully quiet, with chances to enjoy frosted trees and perhaps spot deer.
Best for woodland scenery and slower-paced nature travel.
04 / ALONG THE ROUTE
Two beautiful additions
These make sense when the rest of your itinerary takes you through the Songpan and Jiuzhaigou region.
MINERAL TERRACES & ALPINE POOLS
Huanglong

Planning both Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong? See our Jiuzhaigou & Huanglong route guide ↗
Huanglong is known for its mineral-rich terraced pools, framed by high mountains. In winter, the colours of the pools contrast with the surrounding alpine landscape. It pairs naturally with a Jiuzhaigou journey when seasonal access and travel dates allow.

Xuebaoding from Xueshanliang

When to see snow
Sichuan’s winter scenery changes by altitude, destination and date.
December
Winter activities begin to open at many mountain destinations, depending on snow and operating conditions.
January
A popular time for snowy mountain trips, ski resorts and winter scenery.
February
A strong month for winter travel; allow extra time around busy Chinese holiday periods.
March
Higher elevations may still look wintry, but snow-play facilities can change or close as temperatures rise.
Seeing snow on the ground and watching snow fall are two different experiences.
A clear day may bring snowy slopes without active snowfall. Skiing and snow-play facilities follow their own seasonal operations.

08 / TRAVEL WELL
A few things worth knowing
What to pack and consider before visiting Sichuan’s mountains in winter.
01 Dress in layers
Bring warm base layers, an insulating mid-layer and a wind-resistant outer jacket. Waterproof or water-resistant footwear with good grip is especially useful on snowy paths.
02 Protect yourself from mountain sun
Sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm are helpful even on cold days. Snow and altitude can increase your exposure to bright light.
03 Plan for altitude
Dagu Glacier and some other mountain viewpoints are at significant altitude. Cable cars reduce walking but do not remove the effects of altitude. Seek medical advice ahead of travel if you have relevant health concerns.
04 Allow time for scenic roads
Many of Sichuan’s winter landscapes are in mountain valleys reached by road. Weather can affect access, so overnight stays near the places you want to explore can make the journey more comfortable.
05 Food, families and preferences
For families, choose activities based on age and comfort. Travellers who need halal meals or particular hotel facilities can make those preferences part of their trip plan.
09 / YOUR QUESTIONS
Winter travel, explained
Quick answers to questions visitors often ask before a snow trip.
Does it snow in Chengdu?
Snowfall in central Chengdu is uncommon, and lasting snow cover is rare. For a more reliable winter landscape, head into the surrounding mountains.
Where should I go for my first snow experience?
Xiling Snow Mountain is a popular choice for first-time snow play. Zhegu Mountain and Bipenggou can also be good options depending on your dates and preferred activities.
Where can I see snowy forests in Sichuan?
Wawu Mountain and Erlangshan Labahe are especially appealing for winter woodland scenery. Bipenggou is another choice for snow-covered valley landscapes.
Where is best for a mountain sunrise?
Niubei Mountain is known for sunrise views, cloud seas and panoramas of snowy peaks. Wanggangping also offers rewarding mountain outlooks.
Is Dagu Glacier suitable for everyone?
The cable-car viewing area is at approximately 4,860 metres. High altitude can affect people differently, so this stop deserves particular care when planning.
Is Jiuzhaigou worth visiting in winter?
Yes, especially for turquoise lakes, winter forest scenery and waterfalls. It is a natural sightseeing destination rather than a ski resort.
Can I combine snow and hot springs?
Yes. Xiling Snow Mountain pairs naturally with Huashuiwan, while Bipenggou can be combined with a stay in Gurgou.
Do the trip durations include international arrival and departure days?
No. The 1–6 day suggestions refer to sightseeing journeys starting and ending in Chengdu. If you want airport transfers and hotel nights before and after the sightseeing route, allow additional calendar days.
Can you arrange halal meals or private transport?
Nacayo can help plan private routes and discuss dietary requirements in advance. Options vary by destination, particularly in remote mountain areas.
