Jiuzhaigou & Huanglong Travel Guide: How Many Days Do You Need?
Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong are two of the most extraordinary natural destinations in Sichuan, China. One is famous for its brilliant turquoise lakes, waterfalls and forested valleys; the other for its colorful limestone terraces, alpine landscapes and remarkable mineral pools.
Both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and they are often visited together on a trip from Chengdu.
But how many days do you really need?
Is a two-day trip enough? Should you spend an entire day in each park? And is it better to visit Huanglong before or after Jiuzhaigou?
The answer depends on your transportation, travel pace and the time of year.
This guide compares practical two-, three- and four-day itineraries, explains how to travel between the parks, and helps you choose where to stay and when to visit.
1. How Many Days Do You Need for Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong?
For most first-time international visitors, three days and two nights is the best balance between sightseeing and transportation.
2 days / 1 night
Fast-paced trip
Travelers on a limited schedule
3 days / 2 nights
Best for first-timers
Most first-time visitors
4 days / 3 nights
Relaxed exploration
Families, photographers and relaxed travelers
| Duration | What you can realistically do | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 2 days / 1 night | Huanglong, one full day at Jiuzhaigou and tightly coordinated transfers | Travelers on a limited schedule |
| 3 days / 2 nights | One full day in Jiuzhaigou, half a day or more in Huanglong, with travel time | Most first-time visitors |
| 4 days / 3 nights | Both parks at a gentler pace, with time for Songpan or additional sightseeing | Families, photographers and relaxed travelers |
Our recommendation: Choose three days if you want to experience both parks without sacrificing your main sightseeing time. Choose four days when traveling with children or older relatives, or when you prefer more flexible arrangements.
Two days is possible, but transport connections must work particularly well, and your time in Huanglong may be limited.
2. Jiuzhaigou vs. Huanglong: What Is the Difference?
Although they are usually marketed together, Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong offer very different scenery.

Jiuzhaigou Valley
Best for lakes, waterfalls and forests
Jiuzhaigou is a vast mountain valley with interconnected lakes, waterfalls and walking trails. Highlights include Five Flower Lake, Pearl Shoal Waterfall, Nuorilang Waterfall, Long Lake and Five-Colored Pond. Its sightseeing bus network helps visitors travel between the main sections.
Huanglong Scenic Area
Best for colorful mineral pools and alpine scenery
Huanglong is famous for its calcified terraces and the spectacular Five-Color Ponds. Visitors travel through a higher-altitude alpine environment, and the sightseeing experience usually involves a cable car, walking and potentially additional park transport.

The two attractions are complementary rather than interchangeable.
Jiuzhaigou deserves a full sightseeing day for most visitors, while Huanglong normally requires around three to five hours depending on walking ability, transport choices, crowds and conditions.
Because Huanglong's upper pools are at considerably higher elevations, travelers should avoid treating it as an effortless short photo stop.
3. Can You Visit Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong in One Day?
Technically, parts of both areas may be seen in a single very long day, but we do not recommend this for first-time visitors.
Jiuzhaigou normally takes approximately six to eight hours to explore its main highlights. Huanglong requires several more hours, and traveling between the two park entrances typically takes about 2.5–3 hours by road.
Combining both attractions in one day would leave too little time to appreciate either destination properly.
The better approach is to give each park its own sightseeing period, even on a short two-day trip.
4. Two-Day Jiuzhaigou & Huanglong Itinerary: Possible but Fast-Paced
If you have only two days available from Chengdu, it is possible to visit both Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong, provided you choose suitable train times and arrange reliable transfers.
However, this is an intensive itinerary, not a relaxed vacation.
Day 1: Chengdu → Huanglong → Jiuzhaigou
Take an early high-speed train from Chengdu to Huanglongjiuzhai Railway Station.
From the station, travel to Huanglong Scenic Area. The drive normally takes around 35–50 minutes.
Spend approximately three to four hours exploring Huanglong, prioritizing Five-Color Ponds and the main scenic walkway, with additional time if needed.
After sightseeing, continue by road to your hotel near Jiuzhaigou Valley's main entrance. Allow approximately 2.5–3 hours for this transfer.
Stay overnight near Goukou or Pengfeng Village.
Day 2: Jiuzhaigou Valley → Chengdu
Enter Jiuzhaigou early and spend most of the day visiting its lakes, waterfalls and forests.
After leaving the park, travel to Huanglongjiuzhai Railway Station for an evening train back to Chengdu.
Important: This return journey is only practical if an appropriately timed train and connecting vehicle are available. Allow approximately two hours for the transfer to the railway station, plus a reasonable boarding buffer.
Do not book a late train without first confirming how you will reach the station from Jiuzhaigou after your park visit.
Who should choose two days?
This option is best for travelers comfortable with early departures, long days and a tightly organized itinerary. It is less suitable for families with small children, travelers with mobility limitations or visitors who prefer unhurried sightseeing.
5. Three-Day Jiuzhaigou & Huanglong Itinerary: Best for First-Time Visitors
Three days and two nights allow you to experience both parks while keeping a more manageable pace.
This is our recommended itinerary for most international visitors departing from Chengdu.
Day 1 — Chengdu → Jiuzhaigou
Travel from Chengdu to Huanglongjiuzhai Railway Station by high-speed train, then take a tourist shuttle or private transfer to Jiuzhaigou. Check in at a hotel near the park entrance and enjoy a relaxed evening.
Day 2 — Full Day in Jiuzhaigou Valley
Begin early and explore the park using its sightseeing bus network and designated walking paths. Popular highlights include Five Flower Lake, Pearl Shoal Waterfall, Long Lake, Five-Colored Pond and the Shuzheng lakes.
Day 3 — Jiuzhaigou → Huanglong → Chengdu
Depart early for Huanglong, allowing roughly 2.5–3 hours by road. Spend approximately three to five hours exploring the scenic area before transferring to Huanglongjiuzhai Railway Station for a suitable return train to Chengdu.
Why This Route Works
This arrangement gives Jiuzhaigou a dedicated full day and keeps Huanglong separate from the main valley visit.
It also avoids rushing directly to Huanglong on your arrival day, which may be helpful for travelers who have just arrived from lower elevations.
However, Day 3 still requires careful scheduling. You must coordinate the road journey from Jiuzhaigou to Huanglong, sightseeing time, the final railway station transfer and your booked train departure.
If you prefer to visit Huanglong first, another valid sequence is Chengdu → Huanglong → Jiuzhaigou on Day 1, Jiuzhaigou sightseeing on Day 2, and a more relaxed return to Chengdu on Day 3.
The better sequence depends on your arrival time, weather, altitude considerations and available transportation.

6. Four-Day Jiuzhaigou & Huanglong Itinerary: Best for a Relaxed Journey
Four days and three nights give you more freedom to enjoy the landscapes and reduce the pressure of same-day sightseeing and long transport connections.
This option is particularly suitable for families, photographers, couples and travelers who prefer a slower pace.
Day 1: Chengdu → Jiuzhaigou
Travel to Jiuzhaigou by high-speed rail and shuttle or private car. Arrive at your hotel near the park entrance and take the rest of the day to relax.
Day 2: Full-Day Jiuzhaigou Valley
Enjoy a full day in Jiuzhaigou without worrying about catching a return train afterward.
Spend time exploring the lakes and waterfalls, using the sightseeing bus to reach different sections of the valley.
Return to your hotel in the evening.
Day 3: Jiuzhaigou → Huanglong → Songpan
Travel to Huanglong in the morning and explore the main scenic area at a comfortable pace.
Afterward, continue toward Songpan or Chuanzhusi for an overnight stay.
If time and conditions permit, explore part of Songpan Ancient Town, known for its historic walls and cultural heritage.
Day 4: Songpan → Chengdu
Enjoy a relaxed morning before traveling back to Chengdu by high-speed train or private vehicle.
This itinerary allows extra flexibility for weather, sightseeing and rest.
Travelers who prefer photography or a deeper exploration of Jiuzhaigou can also use the additional time for a second park visit, subject to opening areas and a separate valid admission reservation.
7. How to Travel Between Jiuzhaigou, Huanglong and Chengdu
The most important transport detail is that Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong are separate attractions, connected by mountain roads.
Understanding the Main Locations
Huanglongjiuzhai Railway Station (黄龙九寨站)
Jiuzhaigou Valley Scenic Area (九寨沟景区)
Huanglong Scenic Area (黄龙景区)
Songpan Ancient Town (松潘古城)
| Journey | Approximate travel time |
|---|---|
| Chengdu East → Huanglongjiuzhai Station | 1.5–2.5 hours by train |
| Huanglongjiuzhai Station → Huanglong Scenic Area | 35–50 minutes by road |
| Huanglongjiuzhai Station → Jiuzhaigou entrance | Around 2 hours by road |
| Jiuzhaigou entrance → Huanglong Scenic Area | Around 2.5–3 hours by road |
These are planning estimates. Mountain road conditions and weather can change journey times. Jiuzhaigou's official website confirms the railway station's distance from Huanglong at approximately 27 km and from Jiuzhaigou at approximately 93 km.
Traveling by High-Speed Train
The Chengdu–Huanglongjiuzhai rail connection has made visits to both parks significantly easier.
For independent travelers, the main challenge is not the train journey itself, but coordinating the road transfers between the railway station and the two scenic areas.
The Jiulv Yuexing (九旅悦行) tourist shuttle service provides relevant station and scenic-area connections. Check its WeChat mini-program for available routes and booking details.
Do not assume there is a convenient direct bus between every pair of locations at every time of day. In some cases, you may need to transfer via a transport hub or arrange a private vehicle.
The official Jiuzhaigou tourism notices provide further information about the current train-and-shuttle connection.
Traveling by Private Car
A private driver allows more control over the sequence of the two parks and reduces the need to move luggage between transport services.
It is particularly useful if you want to travel directly from Jiuzhaigou to Huanglong and continue to a railway station afterward.
The completed Jiuzhaigou–Mianyang Expressway also makes direct road journeys between Chengdu and the Jiuzhaigou region more practical than in earlier years.
For detailed information about getting from Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou, including flights, trains, coaches and private transfers, see our separate transportation guide.
8. Where Should You Stay?
Your hotel location can make a considerable difference to your sightseeing experience.
Goukou and Pengfeng Village: Best for Jiuzhaigou Sightseeing
For most first-time visitors, staying near Goukou (沟口) or Pengfeng Village (彭丰村) is the most convenient option.
These areas are close to the main entrance of Jiuzhaigou National Park, and some hotels are within walking distance.
This location is especially useful when planning a full day in Jiuzhaigou, as you can arrive at the park early without a lengthy morning transfer.
Zhangzha Town: More Accommodation Choices
Zhangzha Town (漳扎镇) covers a wider tourism and accommodation area, including the park entrance district.
Some hotels are close to the visitor center, while others require a taxi or hotel shuttle.
Always check the actual distance from your accommodation to the park entrance before booking.
Songpan or Chuanzhusi: Best for Transfers and Flexible Routes
Songpan and Chuanzhusi are useful bases for travelers using Huanglongjiuzhai Railway Station or planning to visit Huanglong.
They can be practical for an overnight stay before returning to Chengdu.
However, these locations are not convenient substitutes for staying near the Jiuzhaigou entrance if your priority is an early start in Jiuzhaigou Valley.
Should You Stay in Jiuzhaigou County Town?
Jiuzhaigou County Town is not the same as the national park entrance area.
Choosing a hotel in the county town can add substantial morning driving time.
For a standard two- or three-day trip focused on Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong, staying near the park entrance is generally more convenient.
9. Best Time to Visit Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong Together
Both destinations offer distinctive landscapes throughout the year, but seasonal conditions can change the ideal itinerary.
Spring | March–May
Jiuzhaigou begins to emerge from winter, with fresh greenery and spring flowers appearing as temperatures rise. Huanglong can remain cold, and snow or ice may affect higher walking areas. Check park and cable-car arrangements before travel.
Summer | June–August
Forests are green and waterfalls are often particularly impressive. Summer is a popular time to escape the heat of lower-elevation cities, although rain and crowds may affect travel plans. Bring a waterproof jacket and allow flexibility for road conditions.
Autumn | September–November
Autumn is one of the most sought-after seasons, especially when Jiuzhaigou's forests turn golden, orange and red around its blue lakes. Huanglong's mineral pools and surrounding mountain scenery can also be spectacular. Peak foliage varies annually, and popular travel dates require early booking.

Winter | December–February
Jiuzhaigou offers a quieter landscape of snowy mountains and frozen waterfalls. Huanglong is colder and higher, with ice, snow and potentially reduced water levels in some pools. Park operations, walking routes and transportation may change with conditions.
Which season is best?
For travelers whose priority is colorful forests and photography, autumn is particularly appealing. For green landscapes and flowing waterfalls, summer is attractive, while winter provides a different experience centered on snow and ice.
Huanglong's appearance should never be described as identical throughout the year. Pool water levels, snow cover and access conditions vary, so it is important to plan realistically.
Official notices confirm that Huanglong operates different seasonal schedules and may adjust services because of weather.

10. Essential Travel Tips: Altitude, Tickets and Timing
Allow Enough Time at Huanglong
Huanglong's famous upper pools are at an elevation of roughly 3,500–3,600 meters.
Even visitors who feel comfortable in Jiuzhaigou may notice the greater altitude when walking uphill in Huanglong.
Move at a comfortable pace, take breaks and avoid strenuous activity if you feel unwell. Travelers with relevant medical concerns should seek professional advice before visiting high-altitude destinations.
A cable car can reduce the amount of climbing, but it does not eliminate walking at altitude. Check whether the cable car and other transport services are operating on your travel date.
Book Park Tickets Before Traveling
Jiuzhaigou uses a real-name advance reservation system, and admission can sell out on popular dates.
For 2026, the official scenic-area notices distinguish a peak season from April 1 to November 15 and a low season from November 16 to March 31.
The official 2026 peak-season admission is CNY 190, with a separate CNY 90 sightseeing bus ticket for an adult visitor. Ticket policies and concessions should be reconfirmed before travel.
Huanglong also has seasonal prices and transport charges. As of its June 2026 peak-season announcement, the adult admission price was CNY 170, excluding separately charged transport services.
Check Opening Hours Separately
Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong do not necessarily have the same opening hours or last-entry rules.
In an August 2026 announcement, Jiuzhaigou stated an entry window of 7:30 AM–2:00 PM and a closing time of 6:00 PM. Huanglong announced an 8:00 AM opening time from April 25, 2026, with its cable-car and transport operations subject to their own schedules.
Do not plan your trip based solely on the park closing time. Allow sufficient time to enter, complete your sightseeing and exit before services stop.
Plan the Journey Around Your Train, Not Just the Park
If you are returning to Chengdu after Huanglong, confirm the time needed to reach Huanglongjiuzhai Railway Station and leave a buffer before departure.
If you are returning after Jiuzhaigou, account for the longer station transfer.
Do not assume that evening trains or connecting buses are available on every date.
Choose a Pace That Fits Your Group
Families with children, older visitors and travelers who prefer a relaxed experience should generally avoid squeezing both parks into a two-day schedule.
For such groups, three or four days offer better opportunities for rest and adjustments.
11. Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. How many days do you need for Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong?
Three days and two nights is the best choice for most first-time visitors. Two days is possible with carefully coordinated transfers, while four days provides a more relaxed experience.
Q2. Can I visit Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong in two days?
Yes. You can visit Huanglong on the first day and spend most of the second day in Jiuzhaigou, but the schedule will be intensive. Returning to Chengdu on the second evening depends on suitable train and road connections.
Q3. Can I visit Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong on the same day?
We do not recommend it. Jiuzhaigou usually deserves a full sightseeing day, Huanglong needs several hours, and travel between them takes additional time.
Q4. Should I visit Huanglong before or after Jiuzhaigou?
Both sequences are possible. Visiting Huanglong first can work well with an early train arrival, while visiting Jiuzhaigou first may create a gentler introduction to the region before exploring Huanglong's higher elevations.
Q5. How far is Huanglong from Jiuzhaigou?
Allow approximately 2.5–3 hours by road between the two scenic-area entrances under typical conditions. Actual journey times depend on the mountain route and weather.
Q6. Where should I stay when visiting both parks?
For most two- and three-day itineraries, stay near the Jiuzhaigou park entrance in Goukou or Pengfeng Village. For a four-day itinerary, a night in Songpan or Chuanzhusi can be convenient after visiting Huanglong.
Q7. Can I visit both parks using high-speed trains?
Yes, but trains do not enter either park. Huanglongjiuzhai Railway Station is a useful arrival point, and travelers still need shuttle buses or private vehicles for the final transfers.
Q8. Is Huanglong difficult to visit because of the altitude?
Huanglong is significantly higher than much of Jiuzhaigou. Walking may feel more demanding, and some travelers can experience altitude-related symptoms. A cable car may reduce climbing, but you should still plan conservatively.
Q9. Is winter a good time to visit Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong?
Winter can be beautiful, particularly for snowy scenery in Jiuzhaigou. Huanglong may have icy paths and seasonal changes in its colorful pools, so current operations and access should be checked before booking.
Q10. Is a four-day trip worth it?
Yes, especially for families, photographers and travelers who prefer more time to enjoy each destination. The additional day can reduce transport pressure and allow a visit to Songpan or more relaxed sightseeing.
Final Thoughts: Is 2, 3 or 4 Days Best?
Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong are best experienced as two distinct natural destinations rather than two stops to rush through in a single day.
A two-day itinerary can work when time is limited, but it requires early departures and carefully planned transport.
A three-day, two-night itinerary is the most practical choice for most international visitors who want to see both parks.
With four days, you can enjoy a slower journey and add more flexibility for weather, photography or cultural experiences around Songpan.
Whichever itinerary you choose, give Jiuzhaigou enough time for a proper full-day visit, arrange your transport connections in advance and allow for Huanglong's higher elevation.
