WHY SICHUAN & CHONGQING?
An easy flight away.
A completely different winter.
The family had already travelled through China several times.
With more time to travel after retirement,
discovering different parts of the country had gradually
become part of life.
The initial inspiration for Sichuan was simple:
videos of its winter mountains looked beautiful.
For travellers from tropical Malaysia,
snow-covered valleys and high mountains offered
a completely different kind of holiday.
Direct air connections from Kuala Lumpur to Chengdu
and Chongqing also make Southwest China especially convenient
for travellers from Malaysia and other parts of Southeast Asia.
But over three to four months of planning,
the journey gradually became much more than a winter sightseeing trip.
It became an 11-day introduction to different landscapes,
communities, food traditions and ways of life across
Sichuan and Chongqing.
MANY COMMUNITIES · ONE JOURNEY
Southwest China
is not one single experience.
As the route moved from Chengdu into western Sichuan
and later to Chongqing, the family experienced not only
changing landscapes, but also communities shaped by
different cultures and traditions.
Qiang
Through parts of the Aba region, the journey passed
areas shaped by Qiang culture, architecture
and mountain life.
Tibetan
Jiuzhaigou and the surrounding highland areas introduced
another side of western Sichuan through Tibetan-influenced
landscapes and local culture.
Muslim
Local mosques and Muslim communities in places such as Songpan
offered a perspective on Muslim life in China
very different from Malaysia.
City Life
Chengdu and Chongqing then brought the family back into
a very different rhythm of modern Chinese urban life.
✦
MUSLIM-FRIENDLY BY DESIGN
Halal was built
into the journey.
Halal dining was arranged throughout the entire journey.
Restaurant choices were considered together with
each day’s route, hotel location and mosque visits,
rather than being left until the family arrived.
This allowed the family to move from western Sichuan
to Chengdu and Chongqing without repeatedly having to solve
the same dining question in every new destination.
Local flavours still remained part of the experience,
as long as they fitted the family’s halal dietary requirements.
MOSQUES ALONG THE JOURNEY
Songpan
Maoxian
Dujiangyan
Chongqing
Chengdu
In Chengdu, accommodation was arranged around
Tianfu Square and Huangcheng Mosque,
keeping the mosque, halal dining options
and central city areas within convenient reach.
SONGPAN
A different side
of Muslim China.
Songpan became one of the places where several parts
of the journey came together.
The family visited the local mosque,
spent time around the Muslim community
and experienced a side of Muslim life in China
that felt very different from home.
They also tried locally prepared halal yak skewers —
a simple but memorable taste of everyday life
in a highland town of western Sichuan.
WINTER IN WESTERN SICHUAN
4860
METRES · DAGU GLACIER
From a winter video
to coffee above the clouds.
Dagu Glacier was one of the winter highlights of the route.
The family reached the snow-covered summit
and visited the mountain-top café at 4,860 metres.
✦
PLANNED AROUND THE FAMILY
The same destination
can be experienced differently.
The route also needed to work comfortably for the family as a whole.
Walking distance, steep slopes, long stairways
and vehicle access were considered during planning.
This mattered especially in Chongqing,
where hills and multi-level streets are part of the city itself.
The aim was not to remove the important sights,
but to find a more suitable way of experiencing them.

Worked with the family for three to four months,
bringing together winter destinations, halal dining,
mosque visits, hotel locations, travel pace,
cultural experiences and Chengdu–Chongqing logistics.

with daily communication, itinerary coordination,
halal dining arrangements and on-trip adjustments.
DINING
Halal Throughout
Halal requirements were considered throughout
the entire route, rather than handled separately
after arriving at each destination.
BEYOND THE ITINERARY
The family also used some personal time to explore
traditional Chinese medicine locally —
one of several spontaneous experiences
that happened beyond the planned route.
✦
CHINA · ONE JOURNEY AT A TIME
One country.
Many journeys still to come.
One of the guests had already travelled through China
several times before this journey, including a recent visit to Guizhou.
With more time to travel after retirement,
the plan is to keep exploring different parts of the country —
not only famous sights, but also regional food,
communities and everyday life.
This time it was Sichuan and Chongqing in winter.
Jiuzhaigou has now been seen in snow.
Our next suggestion is simple:
return in autumn and see the same landscape
in a completely different season.
The list of places to explore is still getting longer.
